How to make perfect crumbles

Your rating: None
Many people make crumbles but they can be dry and gritty. If you follow the 4-3-2-1 method you will make perfect crumbles every time.
What you'll need:
4oz (114g) plain flour
3oz (90g) sugar
2oz (60g) margarine or spread e.g. Flora
1 pinch of salt (optional)
Peeled, cored and chopped fruit
Extra sugar
Rub the spread into the flour with your fingers to make a crumbly mixture.
Stir in the sugar and, if required, add a little salt.
Half or three quarters fill a pie dish with any prepared fruit or fruit mixtures including cooking apples, blackcurrants, raspberries or apricots. If necessary, sprinkle on extra sugar.
Scatter over the crumble mixture but do not press down too firmly.
Bake at 180oC or Gas Mark 4 for 35 minutes.
Fruit crumbles are delicious served warm or cold.
For a healthier pudding, replace 1/2 - 1oz of flour with porridge oats.
