How To Make A Lattice Pie Top

Your rating: None
A pie with a lattice top can make any pie look pretty. If you’ve never made a lattice pie top before it can seem difficult. But it’s quite easy once you know how. The trick to creating a lattice pie top is in the dough crust. The crust must be strong enough to handle when creating the weaving for a pie top. You can make your own pie crust or you can buy it from your local supermarket.
What you'll need:
Pie base with filling
Pie crust
Pizza cutter (optional)
Rolling pin
Take your pie crust and roll it out at least 2 inches bigger in diameter to your pie base.
Use the pastry cutter or knife to cut out ½ inch wide strips along the pastry. Take your pie base with filling and lay 4 or 5 strips over the filling with ½ inch space between each strip.
Take every other strip and fold it back on itself. It will look like one strip down and next strip folded back and repeated like this until the last strip over the filling.
Lay one strip in the middle of the pie, right up to the folded strips. Unfold the folded strips over the strip you just laid down.
Fold back the other strips over the strip laid down on the middle. Lay a second strip next to the middle strip with some space in between them. Unfold back the folded strips over the strip you just laid down.
Repeat this over the other side of the pie until the pie top is fully weaved. Trim any strips hanging over the pie base edge. Fold in the pie base edges over the lattice strips and secure the edges together by crimping.
You can bake your pie or store it in your fridge until you’re ready to bake it.
After making a few lattice pie tops, you’ll be able to do it quickly without really thinking. You can lattice any fruit pie or tarts that you want with the above technique.
You can make your strips thinner or thicker if you want.
You can twist the strips to create a twisted weave look.
If you use a pastry wheel with a zigzag edge, it will create strips with zigzag edges.
You can also use a lattice pie cutter to create a lattice design for your pie top.
