Cocktails are all about theatre; the intricacies of exotic ingredients paired and combined in uncommon ways with flair and imagination. The Blue Blazer is a fiery beverage with the very essence of cocktail culture.
What you'll need:
2 cups or metal pint mugs
50ml/15oz whisky
50ml/1.5oz hot water
2 tsp sugar syrup/honey
1-2 tsp Demerara sugar
Twist of lemon zest
1:
Fill both mugs with boiling water and allow to stand until well warmed. Discard the hot water.
2:
Pour 50ml/1.5oz of whisky into one of the mugs. A good quality blend is generally the best option for a Blue Blazer but a single malt can be used if preferred.
3:
Into the second mug pour 50ml/1.5oz of boiling water. Add 2 teaspoons of either sugar syrup, honey or Demerara sugar.
4:
The warmth of the mug will result in the whisky giving off alcoholic fumes. Using a lighter or a match carefully ignite the whisky.
5:
Pour the flaming whisky from one mug into the other. Immediately pour the water and whisky back into the empty mug. Repeat this process 5-6 times until sugar, whisky and water are well mixed.
6:
Garnish with either a fresh lemon slice or a twist of lemon zest.
Conclusion:
The Blue Blazer is all about the show. However, when correctly mixed it makes for an equally satisfying winter cocktail.
Tips:
Metal pint mugs are preferable when making a Blue Blazer as they warm easily and retain heat well.
Make sure both mugs are well warmed before lighting the whisky.
Warnings:
The Blue Blazer is at the end of the day a mixture of fire and alcohol and should be treated with care and respect.
